Energy Star rehab provides comfort and efficiency in older home

Looking to upgrade her house on Pittsburgh’s South Side, this homeowner turned to Energy Star, a national program offering a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency and comfort. We completed a rehab that exceeded Energy Star guidelines. The renovation brought back the home’s ten-foot ceilings and larger window openings and added French doors with transoms to take in views of downtown Pittsburgh. The homeowner enjoys the benefits of a new home in an early 1900s Pittsburgh house, including:

  • Updated and expanded eat-in kitchen using Energy Star appliances and lighting

  • Redesigned bedrooms, closets and bathrooms

  • Enlarged, efficient windows maximizing natural light

  • Increased functionality and storage by relocating laundry area to second floor

  • Upgraded whole-house heating with Energy Star boiler and hot water on-demand heating

  • Added comfort with attic and basement cellulose insulation and air sealants

  • New HEPA air-filtration system

  • Other “green” features including engineered lumber and marmoleum
